Antique Back Board Pack, Mountain Climbing, 10 Tools, Rock Climbing Back Pack , Alpinism, Ice Climbing Old Tools, Cassin Italy, Switzerland
This is a very old back board pack, Trappers Pack or Mountaineering Pack. Made from solid hardwoods and a very strong rope like material, the frame of which is still very sturdy and strong. No missing screws. The webbing is very secure, no major frays, strong and true. The strapping is also secure and strong, and all present, however there are some signs of discoloration on the straps and on the clamps for adjusting the straps to fit. This pack has been well taken care of, yet I am sure has seen many a mountain top, including Mt Ranier, as these pieces were found in Seattle.
There are 10 very old climbing tools, hooks, screws, etc also with this back board. Most are marked Cassin (made in Italy), a few are unmarked, and one is marked Zurich Switzerland.
Whether you are a seasoned Mountaineer or not, this piece would be stunning as a wall display.
Pack measures 27 inches by 15 inches. There are 10 tools, mostly pitons that have signs of age and use. Few labeled Cassin from Italy and another marked Zurich Switzerland. The pack with the tools make for a heavy piece, weighing in at approx 6lbs.
A little bit about Cassin, the creator of some of the finest mountaineering equipment and of which most of the old tools in this group shown were made - Cassin began designing and producing mountaineering equipment in Lecco in 1947 when he produced his first rock pitons. In 1948 he produced his first hammers; his first ice axes appeared in 1949.
In 1961, Cassin was both leader of and a successful ascentionist on the expedition that made the first ascent of the eponymous Cassin Ridge on Mount McKinley in Alaska, at that date the most technical route on the mountain. After this ascent, President Kennedy sent Cassin a telegram of congratulations and, had the Bay of Pigs crisis not intervened, he was scheduled to meet Cassin. In 1975, Cassin led an expedition to the then-unclimbed south face of Lhotse in the Himalaya, but this attempt was unsuccessful as a result of bad weather. Mr Cassin live to be 100 years old.
I wish this piece had a way to tell us the story of where all it has been with it's previous owner. A very old piece, yet in remarkable shape given the conditions in which it was used and enjoyed.
